Prior to joining MSZLM, Justine Baakman worked at a mid-size casualty defense firm in Philadelphia, where she primarily handled the defense of construction, products liability, and premises liability matters in both state and federal court. Noteworthy outcomes of hers included the dismissal with prejudice of a products liability matter in federal court, the denial of opposing counsel’s request to obtain unduly burdensome and irrelevant discovery in a construction matter in New Jersey, and the early dismissal of a matter venued in Philadelphia on the basis of a statue of limitations defense. Since joining MSZLM, Ms. Baakman has continued to develop her practice in premises and products liability matters. She has also begun to develop her practice in insurance coverage disputes.
During law school, Ms. Baakman served on the inaugural executive board of the Mental Health Law Society at Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law. She was a fellow for the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, a program designed to educate inner city Philadelphia youths of their constitutional rights. In 2014, Ms. Baakman won the CALI Excellence for Future Award in Criminal Procedure: Prosecution and Adjudication.
Since entering practice, Ms. Baakman has served as a mock trial judge, judging competitions hosted by Philadelphia area schools. She has also volunteered her time and knowledge to provide local Philadelphia residents free legal on a variety of legal issues.
Ms. Baakman understands the need to provide her clients with a prompt and accurate assessment of exposure in order to insure the most favorable end result for her clients. This often involves the aggressive pursuit of discovery and tenders of defense early in litigation. She also employs a practice of frequently communicating the varying valuation of risk exposure to her clients throughout litigation.
